Pillowpalooza {Petal Pillow}

Here we are on day four of Pillowpalooza!  In honor of my days as a floral designer I couldn't help but use some silk rose petals on a pillow.  They were perfect for simple leaves!

I have really enjoyed making pillow covers out of drop cloth.  They're pretty inexpensive and have a great color and weight to them.  I made this pillow cover using the same method as the the Handkerchief Pillow from yesterday.

1. Cut a piece of drop cloth to measure 20" x 41.5".  If you can line one of you 20" ends along a seam to save yourself some sewing!
2.  To complete the unfinished edge first fold the fabric in 1/2 inch and pin the length of the fabric.
3. Next, fold the 1/2 inch of fabric again while removing pins and replacing the pins back through both folds.
4. When finished you should have made two 1/2 inch folds to create one 1/2 inch seam.
5. Sew, removing the pins as you sew. Now both ends (20") of the fabric should be finished.
6. Lay your fabric out right side up and fold one end in 9".
7. Fold the opposite end of the drop cloth over to so that the total length is 18".
8. Pin both ends about 1" from the edges.
9. Use the sewing machine guide and sew the seams 1" in from the edge.
10. the finished seam
11.  Trim the corners and edges .5" so the seams lay flat.

To create the felt flower:
I followed this Felt Flower Tutorial from food, wine, & mod podge.

1. Create a 7 petal scallop about 2" deep and 16" long.  I did not make mine exactly uniform.  Feel free to be creative!
2. Start at one end and make .5" stitches along the bottom edge to ruffle the flower.  Pull tight and sew the flower together at the ends.
3. Repeat the process with a slightly shorter set of 7 scallops.  Sew down on top of the first set.
4. Cut and sew on a small circle to cover the center of the flower.  At this point you can also sew on a button (I waited until after the flower was attached to the pillow but you could out it on first if you choose).
5. Pin your flower onto the front of the pillow sham.  Make sure you have thread to match your flower and your petals.
6. Pin on the petals and then carefully sew the petals and the flower.  To secure the petals I used a simple X stitch at the base of each petal.

Now it's time to curl up with a good book!

Thanks for stopping in for day 4 of Pillowpalooza.
I look forward to seeing you tomorrow when I will be giving away one of the covers I have featured this week!!  You don't want to miss out!
